I actually love that much lighter, spacier sound they go for on that album, I think they do atmosphere really well. it's too compressed, actually to the detriment of the music at least a bit.
Honestly what mainly holds Gore back for me is the mix. Hell, my ranking of Ohms is still tentative (I've not listened to it that much overall, I just have so many things I want to listen to right now.) Deftones is the band where my favourite album has changed the most out of any band I listen to - at various points it has been Koi No Yokan, Around the Fur, Deftones, Diamond Eyes and now White Pony - and other changes to the ranking have occurred over the years. This has changed so much for me over the years and I'm sure it'll change again soon. White Pony (10) > Saturday Night Wrist (9.8) > Deftones (9.5) > Koi No Yokan (9.5) > Around the Fur (9.5) > Diamond Eyes (9.5) > Ohms (8.8?) > Gore (8.5) > Adrenaline (8) Some of the stuff’s not comfortable for me to listen to". It’s probably one of our only records that when I listen to it, I get a weird feeling. I was a little out of my mind, with drugs or whatever, and just sort of in a dark place. Where this one, even though the words are metaphorical, I was writing a lot about what I was going through at the time. White Pony was more fantasy kind of lyrics, and not really looking inward, and just writing about random shit. "As far as the music, I actually really like it: It’s heavy, and it’s big sounding, and it’s really dark.
I believe it's mostly Chino that can't stomach some of the songs because they deal with very personal topics. It sounds like a very raw and heavy shoegaze band doing their own thing, very powerful and emotional in a dark and twisted way. It's their first one that I think is consciously not nu-metal. Yeah, I know it's a weird choice but I absolutely love that album. It always kills me to see a band release amazing music but for them to later come out and say they don't like it I like that album too, from what I've heard the members of Deftones absolutely hate it. I'll be listening to this quite a bit probably _Īlso pretty interesting that you consider the S/T their best Grave. The way that keyboard comes in at the beginning sets the mood that lasts the entire album. He adds that bit of chill that makes the album really soothing, even on the heavier sections. I absolutely love the juxtaposition often displayed between the heavy guitars and clean singing. That said though, there are some big differences, notably Chino's vocal performance. Maybe I'm just saying that because it's 2:45 in the morning right now, but fuck it's fitting the mood. This album feels much more like a night time album, but still retains the aggression of that album. I love listening to it in my car on a clear blue sky day, just works perfectly during that time. That album just has a very vibrant atmosphere to it. My first feeling listening to this album is that it's basically the darker version of an album like Around the Fur.
About done with my first listen of the entire album.
